Positive Behavior Interventions and Support

Positive Behavior Interventions and Support

What is Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS)?

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture and needed for all students in a school to achieve social, emotional and academic success. Attention is focused on creating and sustaining primary (school-wide), secondary (classroom), and tertiary (individual) systems of support that improve lifestyle results (personal, health, social, family, work, recreation) for all youth by making targeted misbehavior less effective, efficient, and relevant, and desired behavior more functional.

What does PBIS look like?

The staff at AV are always on the look out for students doing the right thing! Students received reinforcement and positive verbal praise for engaging appropriate behaviors across all of our learning environments.

Positive Office Referrals are used by the teachers. When a student deserves some individual praise, they are sent to the office with a positive referral to see the principal and assistant principal. Cheers and high fives are given!

Positive notes are sent home by the teachers to the parents.

In the classroom, teachers have various ways of motivating a promoting the behavior they want to see from their group of students. Teachers may use a point system, token economy, tickets, etc.
