South Pasadena Unified School District School Board Approves $128 Million Facilities Bond Measure for June Election

SOUTH PASADENA, Calif. (March 3, 2026) – On Tuesday, the South Pasadena Unified School District (SPUSD) School Board approved adding a $128 million facilities bond measure to the June 2026 ballot. If voters approve this measure, the funds will be used for upgrades and repairs to educational facilities as well as new construction.

“South Pasadena Unified represents the very best of public education, grounded in outstanding teaching, student success, and community support,” said Dr. Michele Kipke, president of the South Pasadena Unified School Board. “While much has been accomplished, prioritizing school repairs and upgrades will help us meet the needs of tomorrow’s students, including our youngest learners. The previous bond allowed us to complete critical facilities upgrades across the District, and this bond will ensure we can responsibly maintain our campuses while also investing in enhanced classrooms, safety and security, technology, performing arts spaces, athletic facilities, and other essential priorities not fully funded by the state. We are deeply grateful to our community for its continued support in providing the resources needed to keep our schools safe, current, and responsive to students’ evolving needs. This measure positions the District to plan thoughtfully and proactively for the future of teaching and learning.”

A facilities master plan recently completed by SPUSD and SVA Architects revealed the need for safety and security enhancements, maintenance for roofs and heating and cooling systems, and building and site improvements. The assessment explored opportunities to create new instructional spaces, modernize and preserve the historic SPHS Anderson Auditorium, improve technology infrastructure, and renovate restrooms, among other projects.

“Our existing school facilities are well-maintained and highly functional,” said Dr. Angela Elizondo Baxter, superintendent.  “Further refinements and improvements to instructional spaces, campus security systems, and school facilities will help address any shortcomings and prepare for the future. This initiative ensures the District has the funding it needs to make facility upgrades and maintain the high quality of education in South Pasadena.”

More than 20 meetings with District staff and education partners discussing major aspects of each campus contributed to the development of the facilities master plan. The District also recently completed voter surveys, inquiring about the importance of upgrading school facilities. Research shows that South Pasadena voters overwhelmingly believe that maintaining and improving the quality of schools is very important. Voters place a high priority on basic repairs and upgrades to schools, understanding that improvements like these are a wise investment for the future. Current Measure SP bond funds, approved in November 2016, will be fully expended this year.

The State of California restricts bond money from being used for District administrative and teacher salaries or other operating expenses.
