Arroyo Vista, Marengo, and Monterey Hills Elementary Schools Earn 2023 California Distinguished Schools Honors

SOUTH PASADENA, Calif. (January 9, 2023)—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond recently announced that all three South Pasadena Unified Elementary Schools have been selected for the prestigious 2023 California Distinguished Schools Program.

“We are so proud of the innovation and hard work by all our staff, students and parents that go into creating outstanding public education opportunities in South Pasadena,” said Superintendent Geoff Yantz. “All three elementary schools have received the highest distinction in the country—the national Blue Ribbon Award—and the State’s Distinguished Schools recognition demonstrates our ongoing commitment to supporting all students and providing high-quality teaching and learning strategies.”

The California Department of Education identifies and awards eligible schools based on performance and progress on state indicators specified on the California School Dashboard, the state’s accountability and continuous improvement system. Indicators include test scores, suspension rates, and conditions and climate. Both SPHS and SPMS also previously earned California Distinguished Schools Awards.

The Distinguished Schools Program recognizes schools for their excellent work in one of two categories: closing the achievement gap and achieving exceptional student performance. Elementary schools and middle and high schools are recognized in alternate years; therefore, awardees hold the title for two years.
Distinguished Schools represent examples of not just excellent teaching, learning, and collaboration, but also highly successful, data-driven school efforts ranging from professional development for educators to mental health and social-emotional strategies to address the needs of students and families.

Congratulations to Principals Kim Sinclair, Patty Cheadle, Laurie Narro, and the exceptional teachers, employees and students at Arroyo Vista, Marengo, and Monterey Hills Elementary Schools.
